TOPIC:
GETTING UNDERSTANDING
TEXT:
Proverb 4:7, Proverb 16: 16
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore
get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
How much better is it to get wisdom than
gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! KJV
Understanding
as a word is a noun, the verb form is understand. According to Encarta
Dictionary of English it could mean to grasp meaning of something: to know or be
able to explain to yourself the nature of somebody or something, or the meaning
or cause of something, come to know something: to realize or become aware of
something know meaning of words in
language: to recognize and be able to translate the words of a foreign
language, know and sympathize: to recognize somebody's character or somebody's
situation, especially in a sympathetic, tolerant, or empathetic way take
something as meant: take something as settled, know something by learning or
hearing, infer implicit meaning:
Understanding as
a realm of knowledge goes beyond the level of knowing. It is a form of
knowledge that is revelational and it is greatly impactful. Understanding has
many benefits. David in Psalm 73: 17 said: Until
I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. KJV
The primacy of
understanding cannot be over emphasized. None of us can be more effective in
His hand above our understanding. Our lives would find fulfilment in His word
only according to our understanding. Understanding determines our obedience’s
level. Everything we choose to do and not to do is products of our
understanding. Understanding is like an Engine or better still the propeller
that makes the vehicle move.
Every word of
God is meant to give us an understanding. This understanding could perhaps change
our way of life, requires obedience or bring some measures of comfort us or
give us a blessing. Faith comes by hearing (may I say that it is the
understanding that brings the hearing) and hearing comes by the Word of God.
Most times,
understanding is mentioned in connection to Wisdom.1 Kings 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and
understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is
on the sea shore.KJV. Wisdom is like the general principle, understanding
is the framework to carry it out, it gives us detail by detail instruction.
Wisdom informs us, but understanding is stronger because it convicts and
compels. Jesus declared Himself to be the Wisdom of God but do not forget that
He declared Himself also to be the Understanding (see Pro. 8: 1, 14). Ethiopian
eunuch had wisdom to read the word of God but lacks understanding of what the
word of God was saying. (Acts 8: 27-30) Today, as we read the word of God; do
you understand?

CONCLUSION: A
little taste of honey by Jonathan in 1 Sam 14:29, made him say: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been
enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.KJV The word of God
must enlightened our eyes, it must give us understanding. If we fail to get
understanding, it is our faults, perhaps because of our response to His word.
He will not cast His pearl before the swine. With all thy getting, get
understanding. May the Lord grant us understanding in Jesus name.
